Construction Design Management (CDM) Regs – Compliance
An important element in our work as retail premises design consultants is dealing with the requirements of the CDM regs. Please see Retail Design Consultants Services for details.
If you would like to discuss any aspect of a complex, problematic or sensitive retail design, please Contact TK Retail Design Consultants.
Retail Store Design Consultants & Project Management
TK Retail Design founder Chris Stopforth has wide ranging expertise in the field of retail interior design and management. He has specific experience in architectural design and retail estate management and has worked at director level for over thirty years in the shopfitting business.
During his time operating in the retail design, management and shop fitting business, Chris has amassed considerable experience of design situations. He has seen many problems arise and the solutions employed – often very expensive yet still sub-optimal solutions.
TK Retail Design Consultants have developed a very strong appreciation of the practical implications of retail design implementation. With extensive expertise in working on behalf of both retailer and landlord, we are ideally placed to identify and manage the optimum resolution to most retail store design issues. Below is an example of the kind of situation we are called in to resolve:
Retail Design For Canterbury Store
TK Retail Design was approached by Branded Retail to convert the design concept for the Canterbury flagship store, which already had Stage 1 design approval from the Westfields management team. This design concept did not adequately deal with the fire regs and the Surface Spread of Flame requirements imposed by Building regs.
We successfully redesigned the whole ceiling configuration and re-specified the construction material to comply with regs and also to maintain the visual effect of the concept. This entailed a four stage integrated services plan; to co-ordinate electrical, air conditioning, sprinkler and fire alarm installation within the restricted void above the ceiling.

Listed Building Consent
We have carried out a number of design concepts for retailers in sensitive conservation areas throughout the UK, with projects often requiring Listed Building Consent.
We have received a commendation from the Cheltenham Planning Conservation Officer for the architectural interpretation of the listed building façade of the former Hoopers department store into a major multi floor outlet for one of the major UK bookstore retailers.
We designed and project managed a total refurbishment of the Salisbury Cathedral school library inside the 16th C annex of the school, set within the Cathedral grounds.
TK Retail Design Consultants had the unusual instruction to design the conversion of a listed Victorian tram shelter at the prestigious Portsmouth Gun Wharf Quays retail development, into a Thorntons Ice Cream Emporium.
